Picktower on a mezzanine construction

What is a picktower mezzanine construction?
The picktower is a multi-level storage structure made up of rack sections measuring 2.8 meters long and 1.2 meters deep. These sections form the core of the system. Within these sections, shelves made of sturdy mesh are placed – ideal for both light and medium-weight goods.
The shelves can be adjusted in height every 25 mm, allowing you to tailor the layout of your racking system precisely to the size of your stored products. This way, every available centimeter in height is used – with no wasted space.
Aisles are created between the racking sections on multiple levels, and these can be designed in virtually any desired width. This gives you the flexibility to adapt walkways to your internal logistics processes, whether you work with manual order picking, trolleys, or other internal transport systems.
Custom main aisles and system integrations
In larger picktower constructions, it’s essential to organize accessibility and integration with other systems effectively. That’s why the main aisles are designed project-specifically. Together with you, we determine the optimal placement of:
- Staircases
- Conveyor passages
- Goods lifts or chutes
- Escape routes and safety features
The result is a well-thought-out, functional whole that fits seamlessly with your logistics flow, number of order pickers, and applicable safety standards.
Space efficiency without compromise
One of the main advantages of this system is its excellent use of space. By building upwards, you can often double or even triple your warehouse capacity – without expanding your footprint.
The picktower is designed with structural efficiency in mind: the system creates very low reaction forces on the concrete floor. This means less load on your existing slab, often eliminating the need for reinforcement or foundation modifications. This not only saves costs but also significantly speeds up installation.
Robust but not flexible: the only downside
Like every system, the picktower construction also has its considerations. In this case, it’s the static nature of the structure. Once installed, it’s difficult and expensive to modify the layout or functionality. This makes it particularly suitable for companies with a stable product or order structure, where storage needs do not change frequently.
However, if your organization is growing rapidly or you expect major changes in your product range, logistics processes, or storage type in the future, it’s wise to consider alternatives.
The alternative: flexible mezzanine floors with shelving systems
For organizations that require more future-proof flexibility, we offer an excellent alternative: a multi-level logistics mezzanine with modular shelving units.
This setup offers several unique advantages:
- Large spans create open floor areas without obstacles
- Shelving units can be freely placed and relocated
- Easy reconfiguration or repurposing of the floor
- Greater flexibility for evolving logistics processes
Although this solution usually requires a slightly higher initial investment than the picktower, it offers greater long-term value and fewer limitations – especially for growing or changing businesses.
